Septic Tank Size Calculator

Welcome to our Septic Tank Size Calculator, a reliable and easy-to-use tool designed to help homeowners, builders, and property developers accurately calculate septic tank requirements. Choosing the correct septic tank size is essential for meeting building regulations, protecting the environment, and ensuring long-term system performance. Our goal is to make this process simple, clear, and accessible for everyone.

The septic tank size calculator is built using recognised wastewater and population guidelines, allowing you to calculate septic tank size based on the number of bedrooms and occupants in a property. Many septic system failures occur because the tank is undersized, leading to excessive solids, blocked soakaways, unpleasant odours, and expensive repairs. By using our calculator, you can confidently calculate the size of a septic tank before installation and avoid costly mistakes.

Our platform is ideal for single homes, multi-property developments, holiday lets, and small commercial buildings. Whether you want to calculate septic tank size for a new build or check compliance for an existing system, the calculator provides fast and accurate results without technical complexity. It also helps users understand minimum capacity requirements set by building regulations and environmental rules.

We believe that accurate information leads to better decisions. That’s why our septic tank size calculator is supported by clear explanations, worked examples, and practical guidance. We aim to educate users, not just provide numbers, so you understand why a certain septic tank size is required.

By offering a free, user-friendly solution to calculate size of septic tank, we help reduce system failures, environmental pollution, and unnecessary upgrades. Our mission is to support smarter wastewater planning with simple tools you can trust.

Quick Septic Tank Size Reference Table

PopulationMinimum Tank Size
5 people2,750–3,000 L
6 people3,000 L
8 people3,500–4,000 L
10 people4,000–4,500 L
12 people4,500–5,000 L

Determine the Population Size

According to the British Water Flows and Loads (4) document, septic tank sizing is based on maximum occupancy, not actual residents.

Single property sizing:

BedroomsPopulation
Up to 35 people
46 people
57 people
68 people

Example A
4-bedroom property = 6 people

Population Reduction Factor (for large systems)

When total population exceeds 12 people, a reduction factor is applied:

13–25 people → multiply by 0.9

26–50 people → multiply by 0.8

Example B
4-bedroom + 5-bedroom properties
6 people + 7 people = 13 people
13 × 0.9 = 11.7 → round up to 12 people

Step 2: Calculate Daily Wastewater Volume

Each person produces 150 litres of wastewater per day.

Formula:
Population × 150 litres

Example A
6 people × 150 = 900 litres/day

Example B
12 people × 150 = 1,800 litres/day

Step 3: Add the Regulatory Minimum Volume

To comply with building regulations and environmental rules, add 2,000 litres to the daily flow figure.

Example A
900L + 2,000L = 2,900 litres minimum tank size

Example B
1,800L + 2,000L = 3,800 litres minimum tank size

Step 4: Round Up to the Nearest Tank Size

Always round up to the next available septic tank size.
Undersizing increases suspended solids, reduces treatment efficiency, and raises the risk of soakaway failure.
